← Go back Dental Treatments: During Pregnancy
Published on Monday, May 28, 2012 by

Q: Is it safe to have dental treatment during pregnancy?

A: A routine dental exam and cleaning is recommended during pregnancy in the second trimester. Research has shown that expectant mothers with healthy teeth and gums are less at risk to have low birth weight or preterm babies.

Let your dentist know if you are pregnant and he will avoid using local anesthetic or taking x-rays during your visit unless emergency dental treatment is warranted. Remember, prevention is the key — eat a well-balanced diet and brush and floss after every meal.
