What do Mickey Mouse and Captain America have in common? They are both part of Disney’s Marvel at Sea. We are big Disney fans so when the opportunity to take a Disney cruise came along we jumped at the chance. We had never been on a Disney cruise before. The whole family was super excited and rightfully so!
Our Marvel at Sea Disney cruise would take us to two ports of call; Grand Cayman and Castaway Cay. So off we went sailing away on the Disney Magic.
As we boarded, Disney staff were there to announce our arrival to the entire ship. Talk about a welcome! Every day was filled with endless food, fun, and sun. It was all thanks to those remarkable cast of Disney characters, like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Chip and Dale and all the princesses, including Cinderella and Tiana. Since it was Marvel at Sea cruise, a long list of superheroes were on board, including Spiderman, Ironman, and the Black Panther. It was a jam-packed five days at sea.
Before our cruise, friends and family had told us to expect some amazing food on board. And they were so right! An unlimited amount of food is included in the overall cruise price. You can eat at several places on the ship.
Cabanas is a buffet-style eating. This is where we grabbed breakfast and lunch each day. It is not your only choice but it is definitely offers convenience to families especially if you have picky-eaters. Food choices are vast and there is something for everyone.
For dinner, we rotated through the ship’s three sit-down restaurants, Lumiere’s, Rapunzel’s, and the Animator’s Palate. We had an assigned rotation to those restaurants. At each dinner, our whole family was engaged with unique experiences. At times it felt more like dinner theatre than just eating at a restaurant.
If you want to pay a little extra you can book a reservation at Palo, the adult-only restaurant on the ship. While on board, you also have access to 24-hour room service (also included). Enjoy a wide variety of food options around the pools on deck 9, where you can pick up burgers, pizza, deli sandwiches, ice-cream and assorted drinks. Your family will love all the choices readily available.
Entertainment choices include Character Meet and Greet events, little kids splash pad, water slides, swimming pool, non-stop movies by the pool deck and first-run movies in the movie theatre. Your family is sure to enjoy the spectacular productions happening nightly in the Walt Disney Theatre. These high-caliber shows offer incredible entertainment value for both children and adults.
Expect a party on the ship every night. For our first night we attended a welcome party. The next night was a spectacular Marvel party, complete with characters and fireworks. There was also a pirate party (Pirates on the Caribbean) so your children may want to pack their pirate costume and join the fun.
On board you will find several clubs for children of all ages. Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab are for children ages 3 to 12. The Edge Club is for the tweens and for teenagers, there’s the Vibe Club.
Six Tips for Enjoying a Great Family Cruise
Bring refillable water bottles: Refillable water bottles will help your family stay hydrated and drink less pop. You have access to a 24-hour self-serve pop station. Fortunately, there is water there too!
Beware of Motion Sickness: We didn’t have too much trouble with this, but we did bring medicine with us just in case. We also had non-medicated options too. Disney staff advised that we should eat often which was a valuable tip (motion sickness has less of an impact on a full stomach apparently).
No Cash Needed: You need not worry about bringing much cash on board or on Castaway Cay. Everything is charged to your account via your Key to the World Pass card.
Excursions: We booked excursions with Disney for the ports of call. Because we couldn’t get off the boat in Grand Cayman because of the weather, we got a refund. I would recommend Castaway Cay which has a fantastic beach for families.
Pack Light: Don’t over pack because there are laundry facilities on board which is ideal for families.
Use the App: Be sure to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. Through the app you will be notified about all the daily fun activities happening on the ship and also reminded about your dining plans. This same app also enabled each family member to chat with each other while on board.
In a nutshell, it seems that Disney Cruises has thought of everything which is why we enjoyed a very memorable (and truly magical) family vacation together!
